🌙 100 Million Bacteria Inside Your Pillow?
We spend nearly one-third of our day with our faces pressed against a pillow.
But even a pillow that looks clean on the outside can harbor more bacteria and dust mites than a toilet when you look inside.
If you wake up with skin trouble, your pillow might be the cause!
Since your skin, eyes, mouth, and ears come into contact with it every day, your pillow may be the closest gateway for germs.
Today, Knowledge Bot will walk you through how to keep your pillow hygienic—step by step!
1. A Breeding Ground of Sweat and Saliva 😭

While sleeping, we release about 100 ml of sweat and saliva.
When this moisture soaks into the pillow and combines with body heat, it creates the perfect environment for mold and dust mites to multiply rapidly.
This can lead to conjunctivitis, acne, asthma, and more.
In summer, higher temperatures and humidity make bacterial activity even more intense.
◾ HOW TO
① Stand your pillow upright against a wall every morning, with the side that touches the back of your head facing forward to allow ventilation.
② Even a fan can help dry out moisture.
③ Once a week, disinfect your pillow in direct sunlight for at least 2 hours.
2. When Was the Last Time You Washed Your Pillowcase?

Your pillowcase is the first line of defense, directly exposed to dead skin cells, sebum, and saliva.
Despite daily use, it’s easy to forget to change it regularly.
Washing at 60°C (140°F) or higher is most effective for removing dust mites.
◾ HOW TO
① Wash pillowcases once a week in hot water (60°C or higher) to eliminate even dust mite eggs.
② Adding one spoon of baking soda or vinegar along with detergent helps remove odors and oils.
③ Having at least two pillowcases and rotating them makes maintenance easier.
💡 Mix 100 ml ethanol + 100 ml purified water + 5 drops of tea tree oil in a spray bottle to create a pillow spray that disinfects and deodorizes at the same time.
Spraying it daily is highly effective.
3. Your Pillow Insert Needs Care Too!

Whether your pillow insert can be washed depends entirely on the material.
Cotton-filled pillows are recommended for 6 months to 1 year, while memory foam pillows last 1–2 years.
If your pillow doesn’t bounce back when pressed, or if you wake up with neck stiffness, it may already be past its lifespan.
If you experience frequent skin trouble, we strongly recommend replacing it.
◾ HOW TO
① Memory foam: Wipe with a damp towel and air-dry in the shade.
② Polyester fill: Wash separately on a wool or bedding cycle, then air-dry.
③ Latex: Do not wash with water—dust off regularly and maintain good ventilation.

💡 For cotton-filled pillows, tightly tying them horizontally and vertically with string or spare shoelaces before washing helps prevent the filling from clumping afterward.

🩺 A Dermatologist’s Tips for Using a “Good” Pillow
• Prioritize materials with good moisture absorption and breathability over patterns or embroidery.
• Using a waterproof inner cover can help if you have sensitive skin.
• When using shared pillows at hotels or saunas, place a towel over them.
• Set fixed days for sun-drying and hot-water washing to make it a routine.
Your Pillow Holds One-Third of Your Day—It’s Time to Take Proper Care of It!
With just a little extra attention, you can keep your face healthier and your sleep more comfortable.
